On June 12, 2026, Colorado Health Network (CHN) welcomed 120 community members to Cheesman Park Pavilion in Denver for our annual AIDS Quilt Memorial, and this year, something felt different. Where 2025’s gathering carried a weightier, more solemn tone, 2026’s event blossomed into something joyful: a true celebration of life for the folx we’ve lost, the survivors who carry their stories forward, and the community that continues to show up for one another.

Honoring the History of HIV/AIDS in Denver

Kicking off this year’s program was a powerful conversation: The Legacy of the Denver Principles, 43 Years On. For those unfamiliar, the Denver Principles were written in 1983 by a group of people living with HIV/AIDS who demanded dignity, self-determination, and a seat at the table in shaping the response to the epidemic. Nearly four and a half decades later, those principles still shape how Colorado Health Network, and the broader HIV services and medical field, approaches care: not for people living with HIV, but with them.

The program featured remarks from voices who embody that legacy:

• Darrell Vigil, CEO of Colorado Health Network
• Dr. Edward M. Gardner, MD, Denver Health and Hospital Authority (DHHA)
• Calvin Lavan Gipson, community advocate and organizer

Each speaker brought a distinct perspective, clinical, historical, and deeply personal, reinforcing why the Denver Principles remain a living document rather than a historical artifact.

Joy Takes Center Stage

If last year’s Quilt Memorial asked attendees to hold space for grief, this year asked them to also sit with joy. The program closed with a dance performance by Ms. Cleo Parker Robinson, alongside dancers Cedric D. Hall and John-Lambert Roberts. The energy and movement they brought to the pavilion transformed the closing moments of the event, giving attendees permission to feel not just loss, but life — the laughter, resilience, and community that have carried the HIV movement forward for over four decades.

That shift, from heaviness to celebration, is exactly what this memorial is meant to hold space for: both mourning and joy, memory and momentum.
