Making an Appointment

Patients are referred by their healthcare providers, mental health agencies and community-based AIDS service organizations. We require that all patients are seen at least once per year by their physician. Patient’s HIV status and list of medications must be updated every six months.

Your first appointment at Howard Dental Center will be with a member of our Dental Intake Team. Please call 303-863-0772 to set up your initial appointment. Hablamos español

Emergency Services

Howard Dental Center has assumed primary responsibility for providing emergency services for our patients of record and pregnant women.

If you are a patient of record or a pregnant woman, to be seen for an emergency, you must have a photo ID, proof of income, proof of residency, and proof of HIV status signed by a healthcare provider (up-to-date for patients of record, or brought in at time of emergency appointment for new patients).

About Us

Howard Dental Center (HDC) was named in memory of Dr. John Howard who was one of the first dentists in the Denver community to treat patients with HIV/AIDS. The Center began seeing HIV-positive patients on December 16, 1994. Over twenty-six years later, what began as the dream of Doctor Howard and a few dentists who saw an injustice, HDC now stands as a testament to the hard work and creativity of those who have been blessed with its association.

As a specialty oral health care clinic, HDC represents a link between dentistry and medicine.

As HIV has evolved, so has the organization. HDC’s integrated model seeks to work hand-in-glove with physicians, mental health centers, drug, and alcohol treatment agencies, and with nutritional counseling and tobacco cessation programs. On an annual basis, HDC performs more than 10,500 dental procedures and is the dental home for over 1,200 active patients of record. We have successfully created a model that provides the highest level of quality care with successful results.

HDC has certain core values by which we define ourselves, and relate directly to diversity and inclusiveness. These values are Service, Leadership, Community, Civic Engagement, and Compassion. These guide our philosophy of work, how we relate to each other and to the larger community we serve. HDC supports inclusiveness by valuing all people and serving them in an environment that is respectful, honest and which builds on significant participation and input from those we serve.
